Review Atlantis - The Lost Empire [DVD] [2001] / Walt Disney Home Video:

The Disney Studio was built on innovation in animation, so it seems ironic that Atlantis is both a bold departure and highly derivative, borrowing heavily from anime, video games and graphic novels. Instead of songs and fuzzy little animals, the artists offer an action-adventure set in 1914: nerdy linguist Milo Thatch (Michael J Fox) believes he's found the location of the legendary Lost Continent. An eccentric zillionaire sends Milo out to test his hypothesis with an anachronistic crew that includes tough Puerto Rican mechanic Audrey (Jacqueline Obradors), demolition expert Vinnie (Don Novello), and butt-kicking blonde adventurer Helga (Claudia Christian). When they find Atlantis, its culture is dying because the people can no longer read the runes that explain their mysterious power source-but Milo can. Nasty Commander Rourke (James Garner) attempts to steal that power source, leading to the requisite all-out battle. Atlantis offers some nifty battle scenes, including an attack on a Jules Verne-esque submarine by a giant robotic trilobites and fishlike flying cars. But the film suffers from major story problems. If Princess Kida (Cree Summer) remembers her civilisation at its height, why can't she read the runes? Why doesn't Milo's crew notice that the Atlanteans live for centuries? The angular designs are based on the work of comic book artist Mike Mignola (Hellboy), and the artists struggle with the characters' stubby hands, skinny limbs and pointed jaws. The result is a film that will appeal more to 10-year-old boys than to family audiences. -Charles Solomon, Amazon. [+]

Review Power Rangers - The Ultimate Rangers [DVD] [2002] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:

Chosen by fans, the five Power Rangers episodes on this disc are a cross-section of major events from the long-running series. "White Light Parts 1 & 2," from season two, finds Lord Zedd unleashing the very strange Scarlet Sentinel, and the Rangers in nervous anticipation of their new leader, the unidentified White Ranger. "Countdown to Destruction Parts 1 & 2" would probably impress Roger Corman with its budget-conscious but slick mix of stock footage, computer effects, and rapid cutting in the story of the Rangers' near-defeat battling an invasion of Earth. Another nostalgic favorite, "Wild Force: Forever Red," involves an exciting reunion of past and present Red Rangers. Wild, crazy, engrossing stuff, though special features would have been nice. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

Review Baby Neptune (DVD) / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:

There's no denying a youngster's attraction to water, and the people at Baby Einstein tap into that natural interest-and broaden it. They take babies and toddlers from bath-time to the beach, from tap water to waterfalls and geysers. A puppet octopus and duck serve as guides through clearly labelled sections: "Ocean, Rivers and Lakes"; "Rain Drops and Puddles"; "Water at My House. " A child speaks the title at the beginning and end of each unit, but those are the only words in this 24-minute "video board book. " The rest of the sounds come courtesy of Handel, Telemann, Beethoven, and Johann Strauss. Both toy animals and real ones swim through the scenes and the footage of dolphins, sea turtles and fish are fascinating enough that preschoolers won't mind sitting in with younger siblings. (Ages 1-3) -Kimberly Heinrichs.

Review Ratatouille [Blu-ray] [2007] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:

Patton Oswalt, Ian Holm Director: Brad Bird, Jan Pinkava As good a film as Pixar has ever put out, Ratatouille is a frantic, innovative movie, boasting some of the finest quality animation ever put on the screen. Ratatouille tells the story of wannabe-chef Remy The Rat, who becomes drawn into the mantra of legendary cook Gusteau, that anyone can cook. The deceased Gusteau’s ghostly image appears to Remy, and guides him to his restaurant, whose standards have been slipping since his death. Remy, through the manipulation of a lowly restaurant worker called Linguini, soon starts secretly cooking the food, and this unusual set up proves to be a trove of treasures that Pixar carefully picks through. Ratatouille’s trick is to tie its cutting edge animation techniques to old-school essentials. At times harking back to the frenetic style you’d expect of Chuck Jones, it threads an original narrative through its story, which itself is packed with memorable characters (none more so than Peter O’Toole’s superbly-voiced restaurant critic). It perhaps runs a little too long, but it’s so well-written and so lavishly entertaining that it’s a churlish complaint to have. For in an era of cynically-produced family movies, Ratatouille is really something special. With an appeal that spreads across generations, and a quality that puts it right up there with Pixar’s finest, it’s an outstanding piece of cinema, and one set to be enjoyed for many, many years. Unmissable. [+]

Review Three Men And A Baby [DVD] [1987] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:

Not nearly as good as the original French comedy upon which it is based, Three Men and a Baby is nevertheless decent brain candy directed with some crackle by Leonard Nimoy. Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson star as three swinging bachelor roommates who find a baby girl on their doorstep-the daughter of Danson's character (who doesn't know about her) by a woman (Nancy Travis) with whom he had a brief fling. The jokes about dirty diapers and feeding schedules are predictable, but the film gains real warmth from Selleck, who does a convincing job playing a man whose life is changed for the better by added responsibility. A distracting subplot involving some bad guys threatens to derail everything, and the ending is a bit unconvincing as filmed, but the virtues of this film finally win out over its weaknesses. -Tom Keogh, Amazon. com.

-Simon Brew Chicken Little A classic fable gets fused with War of the Worlds in Disney's Chicken Little. In the small town of Oakey Oaks, young Chicken Little (voiced by Zach Braff, Garden State) struggles to live down the embarrassment of having once thought the sky was falling. But when he gets struck again by a hexagonal, sky-camouflaged, hi-tech doohickey, he and his friends Ugly Duckling (Joan Cusack, School of Rock), Runt of the Litter (Steve Zahn, Sahara), and Fish Out of Water discover that aliens are preparing to invade Earth-but since no one believed Chicken Little the first time, why would they believe him now? Though kids will enjoy the bright whizz-bang action sequences of Chicken Little, discerning parents will find the movie tedious. Technically, it has the computer animation quality of Pixar-but with none of their intelligence, heart, or simple storytelling skill. The basic idea of connecting the fable to aliens is amusing, but the script routinely bogs down in clumsy father-son issues that seem like material edited out of Finding Nemo. The jokes rarely have anything to do with the characters, but are mostly pop-culture references that are sadly out of date. The action sequences were obviously created with the inevitable video game in mind, for which the movie is little more than an advertisement. Chicken Little falls flat. -Bret Fetzer.

Review Sleeping Beauty (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) - 2 Disc DVD and Book Set [1958] / Disney:

Disney's 1959 Sleeping Beauty was the studio's most ambitious effort to date, a lavish spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapted from the music of Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her sixteenth birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Fortunately, some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna and Merryweather are on hand to assist. It's not really all that much about the title character-how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here, alongside Maleficent's castle, which, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. -David Kronke, Amazon. com.
