Review Inspector Gadget [1999] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Strictly for kids, this 1999 live-action feature version of the popular cartoon series seems long even at 80 minutes. As a video, it's easier to take and appreciate for what works best in the story: the special effects. Matthew Broderick plays the security guard who is physically transformed into a multi-use cyborg with a zillion attachments, from stilts to helicopter blades to skis. A crimefighter in raincoat and fedora, and equipped with a nifty Gadgetmobile, the hero investigates the death of a man linked to the villainous Sanford Scolex (Rupert Everett). Scolex, who blames Gadget for having to wear a prosthetic hand, develops an evil robot twin of the good inspector, causing much mischief and giving Broderick an opportunity to poke fun at his own performance of the virtuous Inspector. The action is shaky, the script plods along, and the effects soon take over; Everett has to go to the extremes of hamminess just to be seen above it. But children of a certain age will almost certainly engage with the more clever stuff and forgive the rest. -Tom Keogh.

As Tarzan and Jane's first anniversary of wedded jungle bliss approaches, Jane ponders what gift would be appropriate-necessitating three flashbacks from the Disney television series explaining why various celebrations are out of the question. First Jane remembers when her old British school chums came to rescue her from the bush and whisk her back to civilization. Then Terk and Tantor help her recall the time diamond miners hired Tarzan only to double-cross him. The final remembrance features Jane's old neighbour Robert who flies to Africa to recover a music box he gave her-and to betray England. Michael T. Weiss and Olivia D'Abo do the honours as the voices of Tarzan and Jane and Mandy Moore and Phil Collins provide the vocals for two new songs. What can two little mice possibly do to save an orphan girl who's fallen into evil hands? With The Rescuers anything is possible! As members of the mouse-run International Rescue Aid Society, Bernard and Miss Bianca respond to orphan Penny's call for help. The two mice search for clues and with the help of an old cat named Rufus they track Penny to the clutches of the evil Madame Medusa in a dilapidated ship in Devil's Bayou. It turns out that Medusa is using Penny to locate and retrieve the Devil's Eye Diamond-a stone she'll stop at nothing to possess. With a cunning plan, courageous acts, cooperation from local animal life and lots of faith, Bernard and Miss Bianca try to help Penny find the diamond and escape from Medusa. This somewhat dark, classic 1977 animated Disney film is based on Margery Sharp's book, The Rescuers and Miss Bianca, and features the Academy Award-nominated song "Someone's Waiting for You". It's called "the Mozart Effect", the notion that exposing youngsters to the melodies of the maestro can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity and memory. It's a pretty big leap of faith to understand that effect unless you personally see a toddler react to the stimulation. The Baby Einstein folks have a series of tapes (Baby Einstein is also available) that add visual stimulation to the bouncy recordings (using vibraphone, Rhodes electric piano and even a glockenspiel). The melodies are heard against colourful imagery of spinning tops, wave machines, soft baby toys, mobiles and the like. Several parenting groups and magazines have heralded the tapes for children of one to 36 months old, but the Orwellian aspect of introducing babes in arms to the TV screen may cause many to resort to Mozart's music. -Doug Thomas.

Review Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure [2001] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:

One of the remarkable things about making an animated sequel is that actors don't age. It took Disney 46 years to make a sequel to its 1955 hit Lady and the Tramp, yet the events of this made-for-video sequel take place only six months later. Lady and Tramp are getting along fine with their human family, the Darlings, and they have four new puppies. The three girl puppies take after mum, the boy, Scamp, has a lot of dad in him. Scamp dreams of "being a real dog", and that means living on the street as a member of the Junkyard Dogs. Despite his dad's warnings, Scamp (voiced by Scott Wolf) runs off and goes through the trials of a mutt, including run-ins with Junkyard leader Buster (Chazz Palminteri); the dogcatcher (Don Knotts); and a fellow stray, Angel (Alyssa Milano). The formula here is the same as other Disney direct-to-video sequels for The Lion King and The Little Mermaid, and the justification to return to a classic movie is flimsy at best. To its credit, Disney has made a quality effort in the animation department, adapting sets and characters from the original with great success. But the story is never engaging, the songs are forgettable, and the impact unsustainable (and at 62 minutes, quite trite). Nevertheless, a Disney kid should dig Scamp's rough-and-tumble adventures and the cute tale of puppy love (Scamp and Angel even revisit the Italian diner). [+]

A high-energy and wildly comic reinterpretation of Pinocchio, Teacher's Pet: The Movie follows Spot (voiced by Nathan Lane), a dog who desperately wants to be a boy, much to the chagrin of his owner Leonard (Shaun Fleming), who just wants to play with his dog. Disguised as his human alter ego Scott, Spot heads down to Florida in the hopes of being transformed by a mad scientist (Kelsey Grammer)-but the transformation proves to be more complicated than Spot expects. Teacher's Pet almost looks like it was drawn in crayon-the unusual and dynamic visual style sets it apart from most Disney cartoons, and the witty dialogue and songs-voiced with zip and aplomb-make the movie hugely entertaining for kids and parents.
