Review All Saints - The Videos [2001] / Warner Music Vision:The All Saints had a lot to prove in their short-lived career. After the onslaught of the Spice Girls Britain really was not ready for a "serious" girl band. However, prior to their departure from the pop scene the Saints managed to knock out credible hit after credible hit. The Videos captures the best of the urban girl band who only ever managed to produce two albums. As hits go there's a great selection, from the theme from The Beach, "Pure Shores", to their most memorable of numbers, "Never Ever". Good as the songs are, however, most of their videos leave a lot to be desired. The best is the brave cover of "Under the Bridge"-which was not only a hit but musically a surprisingly intelligent cover-set against an urban landscape which was not only beautifully lit but also introduced Khaki combats as a fashion item. Many of the others, though, hold to the traditional pop video format of the girls parading around a strobe-lit studio singing to the camera-possibly the worst examples are "Pure Shores", with the Appleton sisters attempting to look "scary" in a bamboo cage, and their cover of "Lady Marmalade" (which clearly never made it across the Atlantic since Missy Elliott believed that she was charting new ground with her cover for Moulin Rouge). The gems of the collection are the MTV tracks with a live band and great scratching, where you can see proof of Shaznay's songwriting abilities in full- if nothing else, this collection proves that there only ever was one real talent leading the All Saints forward to global stardom. On the DVD: This disc contains very little in the way of special features, which is a shame considering the success of the band and the wealth of interviews that must be available. [+]
There's a discography and track selection, along with the ability to "karaoke" the songs by turning the song lyrics on. The picture format also leaves a lot to be desired with its 4. 3 ratio, however the sound is adequate. -Nikki Disney.

Review Freaky Friday [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:In the wonderfully entertaining Freaky Friday, teenager Anna (Lindsay Lohan) and her fortysomething psychiatrist mum Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) have sunk into a rut of frustrated bickering-until a magic spell causes them to switch bodies. Suddenly Tess finds herself faced with petty teachers, vicious rivals and a hunky boy, while Anna has to cope with her mother's neurotic patients as well as her befuddled fiancé (Mark Harmon), who doesn't understand why his bride-to-be is suddenly recoiling from his embrace on the eve of their wedding. Both Lohan and Curtis turn in deft, delightful performances, with Curtis showing a surprising flair for physical comedy. The movie even manages to explore serious issues about fractured families, new parents and adolescent sexuality with honesty and empathy-and without making the story stop dead in its tracks. This 2003 remake of the 1977 original is a mother-daughter film that fathers and sons can enjoy just as much. -Bret Fetzer.

Review Cocktail [1989] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:First and foremost a star vehicle for Tom Cruise, this paper-thin Horatio Alger story of a young bartender with dreams of get-rich-quick success is notable only for Cruise's immense likeability in contrast to a creaky plot and thinly drawn characters. Cruise plays Brian Flanagan, a young entrepreneur and ladies' man who with his mentor (Bryan Brown) takes the New York bar scene by storm. Through setbacks and tragedy, Brian eventually realises there's more to life than a quick buck, and fights for the woman he loves (Elisabeth Shue). Despite its shortcomings, a worthwhile viewing for Tom Cruise fans. -Robert Lane, Amazon. com.

Review 101 Dalmatians [1961] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Back in 1961, Walt Disney got a little hip with 101 Dalmatians, making use of that flat Saturday morning cartoon style that had become so popular. The result is a kitschy change in animation and story. Pongo and Perdita are two lonely Dalmatians who meet in a London park and arrange for their pet humans to marry so they can live together and raise a family. They become proud parents of 15 pups, who are stolen by the dastardly Cruella De Vil, who wants to make a fur coat out of them. Cruella has become the most popular villain in all of Disney-she is flamboyantly nasty and lots of fun. But it is the Dalmatians who shine in this endearing classic, particularly those precocious pups. Telling the story from the dogs' point of view is a clever conceit, a fundamental flaw of Disney's 1996 live-action remake. -Bill Desowitz Disney may throw around the word 'classic' with a little too much abandon when it comes to some of its animated releases, but its take on 101 Dalmatians is very much the real deal. With lively songs, a terrifically-realised story and one of its very best villains, it remains a towering achievement, over four decades since it first appeared. The story of 101 Dalmatians starts with the two heroes of the tale, Pongo and Perdita. [+]
But when their litter of dalamatian puppies is dognapped by the evil Cruella De Vil's cronies, the pair must spring into action to save their offspring before Cruella gets herself the new coat that she desires. But while Pongo and Perdita may be the pair you end up rooting for, the undoubted star of 101 Dalmatians is Cruella De Vil. A wonderfully twisted, genuinely nasty villainess, she's an astounding creation and adds a real menace to the film. That said, it's not a downbeat or scary tale: toe-tapping musical numbers, plenty of imagination and a good few chuckles make up the rest of the ingredients, and rarely have they all come together quite so well as they do here. Retold by Disney in live action form in 1996, it's nonetheless its animated take on 101 Dalmatians that remains the definitive filmed version. And now packed into a special collectors' DVD set, there's never been a better reason to treat your family to a copy. Unmissable, and a reminder of why Disney's reputation in this field is quite so towering. -Simon Brew.

Review The Insider [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:As revisionist history, Michael Mann's intelligent docudrama The Insider is a simmering brew of altered facts and dramatic license. In a broader perspective, however, the film (co-written with Forrest Gump Oscar-winner Eric Roth) is effectively accurate as an engrossing study of ethics in the corruptible industries of tobacco and broadcast journalism. On one side, there is Jeffrey Wigand (Russell Crowe), the former tobacco scientist who violated contractual agreements to expose Brown & Williamson's inclusion of addictive ingredients in cigarettes, casting himself into a vortex of moral dilemma. On the other side is 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino), whose struggle to report Wigand's story puts him at odds with veteran correspondent Mike Wallace (Christopher Plummer) and senior executives at CBS News. As the urgency of the story increases, so does the film's palpable sense of paranoia, inviting favourable comparison to All the President's Men. While Pacino downplays the theatrical excess that plagued him in previous roles, Crowe is superb as a man who retains his tortured integrity at great personal cost. The Insider is two movies-a cover-up thriller and a drama about journalistic ethics-that combine to embrace the noble values personified by Wigand and Bergman. Even if the details aren't always precise (as Mike Wallace and others protested prior to the film's release), the film adheres to a higher truth that was so blatantly violated by tobacco executives seen in an oft-repeated video clip, lying under oath in the service of greed. -Jeff Shannon, Amazon. com.
