Review Rugrats : The Movie [1999] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

The first theatrical film from the popular Nickelodeon TV series became the surprise hit of the 1998 holiday box-office crunch, trouncing the highly competitive kids market. The key ingredient to Rugrats' success is the writing. Venturing into their first theatrical movie, the pals-including the intrepid diaper-wearing Tommy Pickles, the nervous Chuckie, the twins Lil and Phil, and the wonderfully prissy Angelica-garble English into funny prose ("I want those fugitives back in custard-y!") and use movie references in their fantasy life. The opening here is a dead-on spoof of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The big news for the movie is that Tommy gets a new baby brother, named Dylan (or Dil for short). The rest of the film has no real plot but is a series of adventures as the clan gets lost in the forest riding an inventive Reptar wagon that is the 90s equivalent of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Parents search for the kids, the kids learn new lessons, everyone goes home happy. The Rugrats Movie is not as wildly appealing as A Bug's Life but is far goofier and wackier with its animation. There's also a tremendous sense of joy that is often missing from cartoons these days, and the songs used in the film-from such diverse musicians as Busta Rhymes, Iggy Pop, Lisa Loeb, Lou Rawls, Beck, and Devo-add to the fun. It's an acquired taste, but the creators' first efforts to take the 10-minute TV sketches into an 80-minute feature pay off. [+]

Review The Cheetah Girls/The Cheetah Girls 2 (Duo Pack) [2003] / Disney:

The Cheetah Girls Teen sensation Raven (That's So Raven) stars as Galleria Garibaldi in the Disney Channel's brightly hued adaptation of the popular book series. Produced by Whitney Houston, Josie and the Pussycats meets Destiny's Child in the form of the Cheetah Girls. Granted, they're a quartet-including Chanel (Adrienne Bailon), Aqua (Kiely Williams), and Dorinda (Sabrina Bryan)-but, like Josie's trio, they hope to make it big and, like Beyoncé, they favour exclamations like "Cheetah-licious". After the foursome gets off to a slow start, everything starts to change when they meet producer Jackal Johnson. That's the good news. The bad is that the attention goes straight to Galleria's head (and she was never exactly lacking in self-esteem). By the end, she learns there's more to life than fame and fortune. Aimed at the tween audience, girls are likely to fall for these tuneful teens, while their parents may find all the giggling and squealing a bit much. -Kathleen C. Fennessy The Cheetah Girls 2 The hot girl rock group The Cheetah Girls is about to discover just how important dreams and true friendship are as they head to Barcelona for an exciting summer vacation. [+]
When Chanel's (Adrienne Bailon) mother announces a trip to Barcelona to meet her current boyfriend's family, Chanel is distraught at being separated from the Cheetah Girls for the summer and worries that her mother may decide to move to Barcelona permanently. Galleria (Raven-Symoné) soon cooks up a plan that lands all of the Cheetah girls in Barcelona for a music festival, but once there, the girls' individual interests in music, dance, fashion design and even romance sweep them in so many different directions that there's little time for rehearsing together. Add in some very real competition from Barcelona's favorite upcoming singer Marisol (Belinda Peregrin), her conniving mother and a lack of familiarity with the music festival rules, and the Cheetah Girls chances of winning the contest begin to! fade. Galleria soon realizes that she must let each of her friends go in the direction their dreams take them, even if it means the end of the Cheetah Girls. In the end, all the girls learn a vital lesson about the importance of tolerance, friendship, and dreams. This production is bursting with tight music and awesome dance segments choreographed by High School Musical's choreographer Kenny Ortega. -Tami Horiuchi.

RRP: £17.99

Review Robbie Williams - The Robbie Williams Show [2002] / EMI:

The Robbie Williams Show is the first of many products which EMI hope will recompense them for their huge investment in Robbie. Stylised as a kitschy 1960s light entertainment special, and recorded on one of the James Bond stages at Pinewood Studios, the show opens in a spectacular manner with 80 dancers perched behind the star on a 60 ft scaffolding set. Produced as a "live" and intimate TV special to promote the album Escapology, the show also provides further evidence of the star's quest to become an all-round entertainer. Between the songs, Williams teases and cajoles the audience with his usual patter of innuendo and self-parody. He also candidly discusses the multi-million pound record deal, his separation from long-time songwriting collaborator Guy Chambers, and his 12-month break from performing live. The show is faultless, and achieves its primary objective of showcasing the new album through a sensible mix of familiar favourites and fresh material. The dancers, musicians and stage set are also excellent, and provide further evidence of how Robbie Williams Inc. has become a mammoth enterprise with the fortunes of many riding on his success. However, his continued on and off-stage lampooning of his fame and fortune becomes immensely irritating after a while: change this record Robbie, before it wears you and your fans out. On the DVD: The Robbie Williams Show DVD reproduces the garish colours of the stage set and lighting, and the soundtrack (available in ordinary stereo, and 5. [+]
1 Surround) provides added panache to this light-entertainment spectacular. As well as the 23-minute backstage footage, comprising the standard Robbie-walking-around-with-no-shirt-on material, other extras include Hamish Brown's photos of the show, alternative versions of three of the songs, and footage rescued from the cutting-room floor of Robbie performing "Revolution". Extra footage can also be accessed following the successful completion of the "Follow the Lights" game. -John Galilee.

Review Alice In Wonderland (1951) (Disney) / Walt Disney Home Video:

Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, and so on. The characterisation is very strong, illustrating how hard the Disney team worked to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. For a Disney film, however, it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience. -Tom Keogh.

Review Jungle Book/Jungle Book 2 [1967] / Jungle Book:

Disney's 1967 animated feature The Jungle Book seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's original, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me". -Tom Keogh One of the very best animated films that the Walt Disney Studio has ever released (and the last to be produced by Walt Disney himself), and as downright brilliant as it was on its debut in 1967, The Jungle Book makes a very welcome return to DVD in this excellent 40th anniversary double-disc set. Based loosely on the Rudyard Kipling's book of the same name, the film tells the story of man-cub Mowgli, and the friends he makes in the jungle. And it's these friends who ignite the film, with some of the most memorable characters and songs that Disney has ever put on the screen. Kings of The Jungle Book are the likes of Baloo the Bear, King Louie the villainous Shere Khan the Tiger, while supporting characters such as Colonel Hathi are just as memorable. It's astonishing that it packs so much and so many into its relatively short running time. It's an amazing achievement too that The Jungle Book bristles with such energy and fun, and that it's just as likely to enthral the current generation of youngsters as well as those of us who saw it first time round. And when those songs start playing-from Bare Necessities through to I Wanna Be Like You-it'll take some effort to not start tapping your feet. [+]
A brilliant, brilliant film, and as vintage as the Disney back catalogue gets. -Simon Brew.

Review Dick Tracy [1990] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:

A flawed but stylish adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip by director Warren Beatty, who also stars in the title role. The minimalist plot involves a battalion of baddies who confront the intrepid detective in a series of strung-together vignettes. Al Pacino is a comedic if overblown standout as Big Boy Caprice and Madonna simply smoulders as aggressive blonde bombshell Breathless Mahoney. It matters not that the plot is Spartan, as this dazzling eye candy is much enhanced by Stephen Sondheim's songs, including the Academy Award-winning ditty, "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)". Beatty took his cue from the source material and concentrated on the relationships between these people, whether strained, romantic or hateful. The performances are subtle and more amusing than you would expect from such a visually bold picture. Shot in bright, primary colours, this also won Oscars for Best Art/Set Direction and Makeup (for those inventively hideous criminals). Watch for well-known names, such as Dustin Hoffman and Dick Van Dyke, in cameo appearances and supporting roles. -Rochelle O'Gorman.

Review Inspector Gadget 2 [2003] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Inspector Gadget 2 sees the unlikely detective with higher-tech gadgets and more special effects. French Stewart (from TV's Third Rock from the Sun) replaces Matthew Broderick as the bumbling detective in a plot that revolves around the glitch-ridden Gadget being replaced by a completely robotised female. Parent Trap's Elaine Hendrix does what little she can with the one-dimensional role of "G2". Still, Gadget falls for his rival and the pair team up with his smart-as-a-whip niece Penny and her brainy beagle for a showdown with Claw. Where Broderick struggled to humanise the caricature of an inept detective in the 1999 original, Stewart doesn't even try. Instead he plays Gadget as a cartoon with endless over-the-top theatrics. The enhanced special effects may placate young viewers, but without the comedy of the original, that's small comfort. -Kimberly Heinrichs.

Review Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs [1938] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was nicknamed "Disney's Folly" by contemporary observers; they doubted that the short cartoons shown before the main film could ever successfully make the transition from filler to feature presentation. Surely, no one would sit still for over an hour to watch an animated film, their eyes smarting from the bright colours on screen? Fortunately, Walt Disney and his army of artists persisted and the world's first full-length animated feature was finally released in 1937 to widespread acclaim. Adapted from the Grimm fairytale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is chillingly dark in places, reflecting its roots in European folklore, but the deft Disney touch ensures that the overall tone remains light and the story develops apace, swept along on the perfect musical score. Any lingering gloom is quickly dispelled by the superbly characterised dwarfs and by the humorous antics of the various irresistible fauna that threaten to steal the show in several scenes. The pioneering animation is breathtaking and songs such as "Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho" and "Whistle While You Work", now firmly embedded in popular culture, are seamlessly interwoven with the action. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs happens to be an interesting technological milestone in cinema history-it is also an enduring masterpiece of family entertainment. To the millions who have fallen under its spell over the years, this magical fairy tale remains one of Disney's most enchanting and best-loved films. Only Grumpy could resist. -Helen BakerVHS DescriptionVHS Special Features:All-new recording of "Some Day my Prince Will Come" performed by Barbra Streisand The making of Snow White featuretteDeleted scene: "Music in Your Soup""Heigh-Ho" Sing-A-Long.
