Review The Hoobs - Funny Faces / Uca Catalogue:

The Hoobs continue their quest for knowledge in these two Hoobygalooby episodes from the Channel 4 series for pre-schoolers. Travelling the universe, Iver, Tula and Groove encourage young children to explore the world with them. Each episode begins with a question that the Hoobs seek to answer, generally enlisting the help of the Tiddlypeeps along the way, and follows them as they report their findings to Hubba Hubba Hoob back home. The activities of the Hoobs in the Hoobmobile are interspersed with animated film footage and clips of real children, giving plenty of scope to explore each subject in more depth and supplying additional interest. Each programme provides a springboard for further discussion and offers fun ideas for activities at home or in the nursery, from making masks to drawing mermaids. At the end of each episode the Hoob News provides a recap of the journey-reinforcing the ideas and issues that have been raised along the way. Accompanied by cheerful music and song, mainly provided by the Motorettes-colourful, musical creatures that work inside the engine in the Hoobmobile-the Hoobs stimulate and engage young imaginations with a lively, fun, mix of education and entertainment. Review Atlantis - The Lost Empire [2001] / Walt Disney Home Video:

The Disney Studio was built on innovation in animation, so it seems ironic that Atlantis is both a bold departure and highly derivative, borrowing heavily from anime, video games and graphic novels. Instead of songs and fuzzy little animals, the artists offer an action-adventure set in 1914: nerdy linguist Milo Thatch (Michael J Fox) believes he's found the location of the legendary Lost Continent. An eccentric zillionaire sends Milo out to test his hypothesis with an anachronistic crew that includes tough Puerto Rican mechanic Audrey (Jacqueline Obradors), demolition expert Vinnie (Don Novello), and butt-kicking blonde adventurer Helga (Claudia Christian). When they find Atlantis, its culture is dying because the people can no longer read the runes that explain their mysterious power source-but Milo can. Nasty Commander Rourke (James Garner) attempts to steal that power source, leading to the requisite all-out battle. Atlantis offers some nifty battle scenes, including an attack on a Jules Verne-esque submarine by a giant robotic trilobites and fishlike flying cars. But the film suffers from major story problems. If Princess Kida (Cree Summer) remembers her civilisation at its height, why can't she read the runes? Why doesn't Milo's crew notice that the Atlanteans live for centuries? The angular designs are based on the work of comic book artist Mike Mignola (Hellboy), and the artists struggle with the characters' stubby hands, skinny limbs and pointed jaws. Review The Adventures of Huck Finn [1994] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:

Huckleberry Finn's age has been scaled down in this 1993 Disney film in order to accommodate star Elijah Wood's young years at the time. But that is not the only concession Mark Twain's great American novel must make to Disney revisionism. Wood's Huck, as adapted for the screen by writer-director Stephen Sommers, is all rascal and only nominally a philosopher, which takes a lot of the soul out of Twain's extraordinary story about Huck's enlightenment while travelling with the slave Jim (Courtney B. Vance) along the Mississippi river. Big chunks of the journey are also minimised in significance, and not just for the sake of storytelling economy. Jason Robards Jr and Robbie Coltrane brighten things up, but overall this is an unnecessarily simplified version of a literary classic. -Tom Keogh.

Review George Of The Jungle (Disney) [1997] / Walt Disney Home Video:

Disney scored an unexpected hit with this goofy live-action remake of Jay Ward's Saturday-morning cartoon, a zippy Tarzan parody with topical references and absurd gags. Disney's big-screen version, George of the Jungle starring Brendan Fraser as the sweet, hopelessly inept jungle hero, puts the emphasis on slapstick and silly fun. The klutzy hero, still swinging into trees and stray boulders, saves a lost Los Angeles socialite (Leslie Mann) on safari and, completely smitten, leaves behind his tree-house home and simian best friend (an Oxford-accented ape voiced by John Cleese) to accompany the socialite back to the concrete jungle of LA, much to the frustration of her conniving fiancé (Thomas Haden Church). Fraser's enthusiastic performance enriches our hunky hero with endearing innocence and energetic pluck. The humour is spotty and consistently more juvenile than the original cartoon, but the unending parade of visual gags (including George's pet elephant Shep, transformed into an overexcited six-tonne puppy by inventive digital effects) keeps the tone light, frothy and winningly fun. -Sean Axmaker.

Review The Other Sister [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:

Filming a love story centred on two mentally challenged people is a touching idea, one that's been attempted in, for example, Benny and Joon. The Other Sister is another addition to the genre, a well-acted comedy-drama centring on the romance of Carla (Juliette Lewis) and Daniel (Giovani Ribisi) and throwing in some general family angst as a secondary story line. The acting is tremendous-Lewis and Ribisi both give convincing performances without condescending to their characters. Diane Keaton plays yet another charming scatterbrain, this time as Elizabeth Tate, the uptight, rich mother who wants a picture-perfect life. But good acting isn't enough here. These fine actors drown in a sea of mediocre writing, and we are left with a film with no real conflict or tension. Will Carla and Daniel make it work? Well, of course. Will mother Elizabeth loosen up about her "gay workaholic" daughter and let Carla live her own life? Do you really need to ask? There are a few cringe-worthy moments that have a sense of truthfulness, such as when Daniel stands up at Carla's sister's wedding to announce his feelings. But otherwise, these characters live in a pampered, fairy-tale world where the worst thing that happens to them is that the meanies at school put chewing gum in Daniel's bike helmet. Ultimately, this is a sweet, albeit occasionally saccharine, tale that will move those who are looking for cheerful fare. [+]
