Review Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (DVD And Glasses) [2003] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:The adventures of pint-sized secret agents Juni and Carmen Cortes (Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega) continue. As Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over opens, Juni has left the spy agency and launches a career as a private detective-but when he learns that his sister Carmen has disappeared into a nefarious multi-user computer game, he agrees to go in after her, with the assistance of his grandfather (Ricardo Montalban). Three-dimensional special effects launch us into a topsy-turvy world of battling robots, souped-up motorcycle races, frogs on pogo-sticks, surfing on hot lava, and much, much more. The story is even more incoherent than an actual computer game-but the movie storms along, driven by writer/director/editor/everything-else Robert Rodriguez's sheer visual enthusiasm. It features Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, and everyone else who appeared in the first two Spy Kids movies. -Bret Fetzer.

Review Sesame Street: 123 Count With Me [1997] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Sesame Street:Join Ernie at The Furry Arms Hotel for a musical lesson in just how useful counting can be. When Ernie finds and returns a misplaced key, he uses his knowledge of numbers to return the key to the correct guest. As Ernie begins to learn about the hotel business, he finds many common situations in which counting is essential. Throughout the 30-minute video, Ernie and his friends help children learn to count from one to 20 with such songs as the jazzy "That's How the Numbers Go", an original version of the Chorus Line show tune "One" and "Rap Song #11". Favourite Sesame Street characters Elmo and The Count are joined by new characters including Ding the Dinger, a furry fellow with a bell on his head, and Benny, the bellboy that responds to Ding the Dinger's dings. Children as young as 18 months will bounce happily along with the catchy tunes and two-year-olds will be inspired to count aloud with Ernie. Kids up to age five will hone their counting skills and laugh at the increasingly frustrated Benny as he delivers everything from one bucket of ice to 15 stampeding elephants! If you're looking for a fun video that teaches counting skills, here it is. -Tami Horiuchi.

Review Alice In Wonderland (1951) (Disney) / Walt Disney Home Video:Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, and so on. The characterisation is very strong, illustrating how hard the Disney team worked to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. For a Disney film, however, it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience. -Tom Keogh.

Review Beauty And The Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (Disney) / Walt Disney Home Video:Obviously the Disney suits gave more than two figs about the legacy from the first Beast film, as they reassembled the former cast and spent some cash on production and tune-smithing for this straight-to-video effort. The events unfold between the time in the first film where Belle bartered herself to the Beast and her later return to the village to save her father. So the Beast's heart still hasn't been melted yet and he's susceptible to the inky persuasions of Forte (Tim Curry), a malevolent pipe organ (and former music teacher to the prince). Belle is still trying to win over the Beast and decides that bringing Christmas to the castle will be the way to do it. Please control that gag reflex for this does work remarkably well and though entirely unnecessary and certainly not a complement to the original, it doesn't tarnish its good name. -Keith Simanton.

Review The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride - Special Edition [1998] / Walt Disney Home Video:The Lion King 2 is the sequel to Disney's 1994 masterpiece. As with the Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas sequels, most of the recognisable vocal talents return, creating a worthwhile successor to the highest-grossing animated film ever. We pick up the story as the lion king, Simba (voiced by Matthew Broderick), and Nala (Moira Kelly) have a new baby cub, a girl named Kiara (Neve Campbell). Like her father before, she seeks adventure and ends up outside the Pridelands, where lions loyal to the evil Scar (who died in the original) have lived with revenge in their hearts. The leader, Zira (a spunky turn from Suzanne Pleshette), schemes to use her son Kovu (Jason Marsden) to destroy Simba. As luck with have it, Kiara has bumped into Kovu and fallen in love. This all sounds familiar since all of Disney's straight-to-video sequels have played it very safe, nearly repeating the originals' story, tone and pace. Perhaps there were too many cooks for this production. Besides the two screenplay credits, there are eight other writers credited for additional written material. The look of the film has none of the surprise of the original but is far superior to many other animated video releases. [+]
For kids, the sequel will be a favourite. The comic antics of Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumba (Ernie Sabella) are enjoyable, as is Andy Dick as Nuka, the mixed-up older son of Zira. And there's plenty of action. The best element is the music. Relying on more African-influenced music, the five songs featured are far superior to those in Disney's other sequels. Zira's song of revenge, "My Lullaby", was cowritten by Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. The standout opening number, "He Lives in You", was created for the Lion King Broadway smash and now finds a whole new audience. -Doug Thomas, Amazon. com.

Review Dick Tracy [1990] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:A flawed but stylish adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip by director Warren Beatty, who also stars in the title role. The minimalist plot involves a battalion of baddies who confront the intrepid detective in a series of strung-together vignettes. Al Pacino is a comedic if overblown standout as Big Boy Caprice and Madonna simply smoulders as aggressive blonde bombshell Breathless Mahoney. It matters not that the plot is Spartan, as this dazzling eye candy is much enhanced by Stephen Sondheim's songs, including the Academy Award-winning ditty, "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)". Beatty took his cue from the source material and concentrated on the relationships between these people, whether strained, romantic or hateful. The performances are subtle and more amusing than you would expect from such a visually bold picture. Shot in bright, primary colours, this also won Oscars for Best Art/Set Direction and Makeup (for those inventively hideous criminals). Watch for well-known names, such as Dustin Hoffman and Dick Van Dyke, in cameo appearances and supporting roles. -Rochelle O'Gorman.

Review Walt Disney's Fables - Vol. 1 / Disney Fables:Though its mantle as the dominant force in animation may have slipped a little of late, Walt Disney Fables, Volume 1 recalls the golden age when the studio was capable of producing pure magic. Of the two volumes released this is the strongest, interpreting two well-known tales in inimitable Disney fashion. Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper features a host of familiar characters including Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck, and is an absolute joy: the animation is of the rich, classic nature that made the studio famous and the cartoon strikes the perfect balance between staying true to the original tale and revealing the Disney characters' traits. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, meanwhile, predicts the trend for celebrity voice-overs by employing the golden tones of Bing Crosby to tell the at-times quite dark ghost story. This is the perfect offering for those who continually opine that cartoons just aren't as good as they used to be. On the DVD: Walt Disney Fables, Volume 1 proves that, while such vintage material will never really be able to compete with the CG world of Toy Story, it still retains an undoubted charm. The depth and colour evident in the hand-drawn cartoons (especially The Prince and the Pauper) is given added resonance by the digital format, and the audio track has also benefited, particularly noticeably on Crosby's rich narration. The extras menu features an interactive game, mildly diverting but leaving the feeling that, at a mere 57 minutes, the package is a little slight on value for money. A second volume is also available. -Phil Udell.
