Review Chip N Dale - Rescue Rangers - First Collection - 3 Disc Set [1989] / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers (1989) was the Disney Studio's second weekday afternoon syndicated-cartoon show. Like its predecessor, Ducktales (1987), the series began with a two-hour movie. Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers to the Rescue was recut into the first episodes, which are not included in this set. Chip and Dale were originally pantomime characters who bedeviled Donald Duck and Pluto in two dozen short cartoons. Rescue Rangers recasts them as adventurers who solve mysteries and right wrongs. In addition to a voice, Chip gets a leather jacket and Indiana Jones-style fedora; Dale talks and sports a Hawaiian shirt. They're joined in their escapades by Monterey Jack, a large mouse with a prognathous jaw and a bad Crocodile Dundee accent; Gadget Hackwrench, the inevitable spunky girl/mouse; and Zipper, a housefly. The Rangers' adventures play like a mixture of Disney's The Rescuers and The Great Mouse Detective, with elements of Hanna-Barbera's Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? stirred in. Chip, Dale, and the other Rangers outwit criminal cats, mad scientists, and crooked mice. All of the far-fetched stories seem to feature the same slapstick chases, Rube Goldberg contraptions, and villains getting their rear ends chomped. [+]Disney purists objected to turning the classic characters of Chip 'n' Dale into something they'd never been, but Gen-Y kids liked Rescue Rangers, which ran for 65 episodes. -Charles Solomon.

Review George Of The Jungle 2 [2003] / Buena Vista Home Entertainment:Although direct-to-video Disney sequels usually try to hide or simply ignore the issue, George of the Jungle 2 gleefully points out the lack of continuity between it and the original movie. Here, the good-natured narrator is happy to explain why Brendan Fraser has been replaced and why the special effects look cheaper: it's all a part of an effort to expand beyond the one-joke idea of a block-headed Tarzan who keeps swinging into trees. It's a pleasant surprise that all these self-referential nods and asides to the camera do indeed make hilarious viewing. Replacement Chris Showerman willingly takes on all manner of humiliation at the hands of CG jungle animals and his new extended family. George junior is the main by-product of the five-year gap, and thankfully has inherited brains from his mother's side (Julie Benz). In a dastardly plot to win back his love, Lyle (Thomas Haden Church, one of the few to reprise his role from the original) has the gang trooping back and forth to Las Vegas. With sight gags aplenty, bumbling George has more than just trees to avoid. -Paul Tonks.

Review Lady and the Tramp [1955] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:Disney's first animated feature in CinemaScope is now available in widescreen presentations on video, and it is definitely good to get the whole picture. One of the studio's most original and charming movies, the 1955 film tells the story of a rakish, street-smart dog named Tramp, who helps an aristocratic pooch named Lady out of some trouble and then commences a romance with her. Sweet, funny scenes abound, and the combination of innocence and sophistication would have done well in a live-action picture. Peggy Lee co-wrote the songs and provides the voice of the Siamese cats in one of the film's best-known musical sequences. Review Aladdin (Special Edition) [1993] / Walt Disney Home Video:Disney's 1992 animated feature Aladdin is a triumph of wit and skill. The high-tech artwork and graphics look great, the characters are strong, the familiar story is nicely augmented with an interesting villain (Jafar, voiced by Jonathan Freeman), and there's an incredible hook atop the whole thing: Robin Williams's frantically hilarious vocal performance as Aladdin's genie. Even if one isn't particularly moved by the love story between the title character (Scott Weinger) and his girlfriend Jasmine (Linda Larkin), you can easily get lost in Williams's improvisational energy and the equally entertaining performances of Freeman and Gilbert Gottfried (as Jafar's parrot). -Tom Keogh.

Review Baby Neptune (DVD) / Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm:There's no denying a youngster's attraction to water, and the people at Baby Einstein tap into that natural interest-and broaden it. They take babies and toddlers from bath-time to the beach, from tap water to waterfalls and geysers. A puppet octopus and duck serve as guides through clearly labelled sections: "Ocean, Rivers and Lakes"; "Rain Drops and Puddles"; "Water at My House. " A child speaks the title at the beginning and end of each unit, but those are the only words in this 24-minute "video board book. " The rest of the sounds come courtesy of Handel, Telemann, Beethoven, and Johann Strauss. Both toy animals and real ones swim through the scenes and the footage of dolphins, sea turtles and fish are fascinating enough that preschoolers won't mind sitting in with younger siblings. Esmeralda (Demi Moore) and Phoebus (Kevin Kline) now have a son named Zephyr (Haley Joel Osment), with whom Quasi (Tom Hulce) has become friends. When the circus comes to town, the hunchback becomes enchanted by magician's assistant, Madellaine (Jennifer Love Hewitt), but the vain Sarousch (Michael McKean) is also a thief with an eye for the cathedral's jewelled bell. He forces Madellaine to woo Quasi while he carries out the theft. Will he get away with it? Will Madellaine learn to see the inner Quasi? And will Quasi be able to trust again when he learns of her deception? Songs and humorous hijinks from the gargoyles, such as Jason Alexander's Hugo, illustrate the lesson that-as in the first feature-you can't judge a book by its cover. Review Pinocchio : Special Edition [1940] / Walt Disney Home Video:This legendary animated feature is surely beyond criticism by now and, furthermore, it's unlikely that we'll see such forceful narrative in a kids' cartoon ever again. Disney's treatment of Collodi's story of the little wooden puppet who wants nothing more than to be a real boy is always guaranteed to have audiences entranced. While some of the movie's success is derived from its liberal use of the kind of imagery no children's film-maker would even attempt to get past the storyboard stage today-a mysterious island where children smoke cigars, get drunk and turn into donkeys, a monstrous, malicious sea-creature which is devoid of any trace of cuddliness and a pair of villains who routinely abduct children, to give just a few examples-the characters are depicted with the finest attention to detail, most of the songs have become classics in their own right ("When You Wish Upon a Star" being only one of many) and the graceful, stylised animation positively glows with fine detail.
