Review Dumbo [1942] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly," should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast. Review The Sixth Sense [Blu-ray] [1999] [US Import] / Walt Disney Video:"I see dead people," whispers little Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), scared to affirm what is to him now a daily occurrence. This peaked nine-year old, already hypersensitive to begin with, is now being haunted by seemingly malevolent spirits. Child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is trying to find out what's triggering Cole's visions but what appears to be a psychological manifestation turns out to be frighteningly real. It might be enough to scare off a lesser man, but for Malcolm it's personal-several months before, he was accosted and shot by an unhinged patient, who then turned the gun on himself. Since then, Malcolm has been in turmoil-he and his wife (Olivia Williams) are barely speaking, and his life has taken an aimless turn. Having failed his loved ones and himself, he's not about to give up on Cole. The Sixth Sense, M Night Shyamalan's third feature, sets itself up as a thriller, poised on the brink of delivering monstrous scares, but gradually evolves into more of a psychological drama with supernatural undertones. Many critics faulted the film for being mawkish and New Age-y, but no matter how you slice it, this is one mightily effective piece of filmmaking. The bare bones of the story are basic enough, but the moody atmosphere created by Shyamalan and cinematographer Tak Fujimoto made this one of the creepiest pictures of 1999, forsaking excessive gore for a sinisterly simple feeling of chilly otherworldliness. Willis is in his strong, silent type mode here, and gives the film wholly over to Osment, whose crumpled face and big eyes convey a child too wise for his years; his scenes with his mother (Toni Collette) are small, heartbreaking marvels. [+]
And even if you figure out the film's surprise ending, it packs an amazingly emotional wallop when it comes, and will have you racing to watch the movie again with a new perspective. You may be able to shake off the sentimentality of The Sixth Sense but its craftsmanship and atmosphere will stay with you for days. -Mark Englehart M Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense sets itself up as a thriller, poised on the brink of delivering monstrous scares, but gradually evolves into more of a psychological drama with supernatural undertones. Review Action Man - Vol. 1 - The Call To Action / Walt Disney Home Video:Action Man, the Call to Action comprises over an hour of non-stop exertion featuring the square-jawed hero with the over-developed pecs. This well-animated film is great entertainment and, although the storyline and dialogue may not be terribly original, it has everything a "Team Xtreme" fan could wish for: gadgets, extreme sport and non-stop action. There is also a proper baddy with a proper baddy's name, Dr. X, and a strong tendency for good to triumph over evil. The action starts immediately with Action Man, Alex Mann, head-to-head with his best friend and rival, Brandon Caine, racing across the rooftops of Paris. Brandon brings the "buddy" element to the story and acts as the catalyst for adventure when he falls into the clutches of the evil doctor. Frankly, Brandon is not very likeable-even before he's been "adapted" by Dr. X-and it's hard to see why Alex and his team, a rag-tag posse of assorted personalities, bother to try and free him. Fortunately they do, enabling Alex to test the AMP Factor, the recently discovered mental ability that allows him to consider every possibility in a flash and perform impossible escapes. This special feature-length episode is followed by a shorter story, Grey Areas in which Alex learns more about the AMP Factor and encounters a beautiful assassin. [+]
The scene is set for further adventures and volume two, Action Man, Storm Front is also available. This video contains some violence, hence the PG classification, but should be suitable for most children aged eight and over. -Helen Baker.

Review Santa Who? [2000] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:Leslie Nielsen tones down the bumbling for Santa Who? but wearing a belly like a bowl full of jelly does little to diminish his trademark dimwittedness, which is what gets the bells ringing on this St. Nick flick. Peter Albright, self-involved TV reporter, can't believe his luck when Santa, presumably the for-hire variety, sails into his windshield and gets amnesia-what a story! When his search for Santa's family stops short at the North Pole, his humbug infestation subsides, setting him free to make merry. Predictability aside, Santa Who? drags a sleigh-full of better than average shenanigans into living rooms, making this a winter-evening warmer for the whole family. -Tammy La Gorce, Amazon. com.

Review Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:You won't need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, even if you haven't experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There's a galleon's worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp's androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter). They set out on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he's made Pirates of the Caribbean into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. -Jeff Shannon.
