Review Bob The Builder - A Christmas To Remember [1999] / Hit Entertainment:

Bob the Builder's first full-length adventure, A Christmas to Remember, is a festive extravaganza boasting an all-star cast, including Elton John and Noddy Holder. Bob's twin brother Tom, a zoologist, (voiced by Stephen Tompkinson) is coming home from the Artic for the festivities and Bob's planning the perfect Christmas. But there are so many things to do first and Bob will have to work his little yellow hardhat off if he's to get everything done in time: there's the tree to fetch, the lights to put up in the town square, not to mention the stage to build for Lennie and the Lazers' free concert on Christmas Eve. Fortunately, Bob has all his usual friends to help as well as an extra pair of hands in the form of the loveable Banger (Noddy Holder), roadie to the band-unfortunately, he also has Spud-but when news comes that Tom has been unavoidably delayed, it begins to look as though Bob won't be having a perfect Christmas after all. Meanwhile all is not well within the band: Lennie (Chris Evans) is losing his voice and John (Elton John) is having trouble finishing his new song. Luckily, Roley is on hand to help the creative process along and even suggests a jazzier stage name when it seems that John will have to sing in Lennie's place at the gig. A Christmas to Remember is priceless festive entertainment for adults and children alike: Noddy Holder, whose stage characteristics are perfectly transferred to his diminutive screen persona, complete with Doc Martens and a stovepipe hat, puts in a bravura performance as Banger-while Elton John underplays beautifully right up to, but certainly not including, the rousing grand finale. With this successful transfer to feature length adventures, it seems that no job's too big for this particular builder. [+]

Review Mulan II [2004] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:

With less drama and more slapstick than its predecessor, Disney's Mulan 2 continues the animated saga of the young Chinese heroine, Fa Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga). The story picks up one month after Mulan has saved her country through bravery and determination. Revered by all, she now returns to her village and becomes engaged to General Li Shang. Wedding plans must wait, however, when the Emperor assigns the couple to a secret mission to escort his three princess daughters across China where their arranged marriages to waiting princes will secure an alliance with a rival kingdom and save China from invasion. Meanwhile, Mulan's wise-cracking guardian dragon, Mushu (voiced by Mark Moseley), realizes that if Mulan's marriage takes place, he is out of a job and so he undertakes his "18-phase master plan" of relationship sabotage to breakup the happy couple. Most of the film's jokes come from Moseley's Mushu (as quick-witted as Eddie Murphy's earlier performance), while a trio of prankish soldiers provide additional comic relief. While the film's overall effort is not as sensational as the original, it offers solid family entertainment, healthy female role models, and a handful of catchy songs. -Lynn Gibson.

Review Treasure Planet (Read Along) [2003] / Walt Disney:

Treasure Planet, a pet project of Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Hercules codirectors Ron Clements and John Musker, is an ambitious animation hybrid (traditional animation combined with elaborate CGI backgrounds). It was the subject of numerous in-studio battles, but Disney office politics and a poor public reception shouldn't distract one from its many admirable qualities, not the least being its overall fidelity to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Treasure Island. Curiously revamped as a sci-fi adventure with space-faring galleons, flintlock ray guns and extreme-sports attitude, it caters to a young audience for whom Stevenson's adventure is an undiscovered treasure, revving up the material with arcade-game excitements. It's entertaining, for what it is, and kids will surely enjoy it. Maybe next time, however, Disney will follow its own legacy and properly adapt Stevenson (as they did with their 1950 live-action classic) for a new, and hopefully receptive, generation. -Jeff Shannon.
