Review Knight Rider - Season 1 / Playback:

"One man can make a difference," intones a dying millionaire-well, one man and a superduper car, backed with millions of dollars! Welcome to the deliciously ridiculous world of Knight Rider, the early '80s TV series that launched the career of David Hasselhoff and his magnificent coif (both later seen in the insanely popular Baywatch). After being shot in the face, detective Michael Long is revived as Michael Knight (Hasselhoff) and partnered with an indestructible talking car called K. I. T. T. (voiced by William Daniels). The duo travel around the country solving crimes-basically, it's The Lone Ranger with the car as Silver and Tonto combined. Supported by finicky British executive Devon Myles (Edward Mulhare, actually an Irishman) and sexy engineer Bonnie Barstow (Patricia McPherson), Knight and K. I. T. [+]
T. take on everything from motorcycle gangs to corporate crooks to K. I. T. T. 's own evil twin, K. A. R. R. Like any good cheese, Knight Rider has only grown more pungent with age. Decked out in alarming '80s fashions (check out that blue Members Only jacket in the pilot), earnestly spouting some of the worst dialogue in the history of television, the absurdly handsome Hasselhoff radiates the unique charisma that's made him a cult figure in Germany. In addition to the 21 episodes of the first season, Knight Rider: Season One includes a 1991 TV movie, Knight Rider 2000, that tried to launch a revamped series set in the near future (lacking the cheerful touch of creator Glen Larson, the attempt sank into oblivion) and brief interview footage (including Hasselhoff describing when he read the original script: "It was glowing in my hands. This was gold. ") It's unlikely this boxed set will appeal to anyone who didn't become a fan of the show at an impressionable age, but for those fans, Knight Rider: Season One is gold. -Bret Fetzer.

Review Police Story (Special Collector's Edition) [1985] / Contender Entertainment Group:

Jackie Chan has become a genre unto himself, and watching Police Story, you'll understand why. The plot is minimal: Chan is a hero cop involved in a raid that goes wrong. He's assigned to guard a witness, the kingpin's attractive female secretary (Brigitte Lin). For the rest of the film, Chan's protecting himself from the secretary, from the gangsters out to silence her and from his own jealous girlfriend (Maggie Cheung). But watching Chan for plot is like watching porno for existential themes. While most modern action films steal cues from Westerns, Chan condenses those open mesas into the dense throngs of modern Hong Kong-and tosses in Buster Keaton slapstick. For example, when the opening raid goes haywire, there's an unbelievable car chase through the steep huddle of a hillside shantytown. That's through. No roads, just shacks. Flimsy shacks. [+]
As the film progresses, Chan scales a speeding bus using an umbrella, uses cow dung as an excuse to break into some Shaolin moonwalking and transforms an urban shopping mall into a demented gymnasium (think clothes racks, escalators, and lots of plate glass displays). Chan is amazingly versatile both physically and emotionally-and he's a secure enough star-director to let his co-stars shine, too. -Grant Balfour That Jackie Chan's Hollywood output should have walked the thin line between engagingly awful and just awful should be no surprise having viewed Police Story, his breakthrough Hong Kong film. Not only starring but also directed by Chan, the film is a combination of risible plot, knockabout humour and stunning stunts-a kind of Carry On Kung Fu. The plot of the film finds itself lost in the high-octane stunts and matters so little that Chan's character is not even given another name to the actor's own. However, if you can put your critical facilities on hold, Police Story is enormous fun. The lines between good guys and bad guys are clearly drawn and most of the acting seems to be confined to running around and pointing and it's all worth it just to see the final fight sequence-a true spectacular set in a shopping mall, showing plainly why the film was dubbed "Glass Story" by the stunt teams. Perhaps this is why the film wins out so convincingly over its Hollywood counterparts. We know that it was Chan himself performing these breathtaking stunts and that he really did suffer for his art, the closing credits show him and others being carried off set to hospital on numerous occasions. Now that's what I call method acting. On The DVD: The film's basic production values are something that even DVD cannot enhance (the opening titles visibly wobble) but that only adds to the film's charm. The audio options of Cantonese, subtitled or dubbed are extremely useful, with the latter-clearly voiced by a group of out of work actors in an LA sound studio, which only serves to enhance the movie's surreal quality. Hong Kong cinema expert Bey Logan's commentary is superb-giving an insight into Chan, his movies, the Asian film industry and its lasting influence on more mainstream cinema-and is delivered with such enthusiasm (particularly during the fight sequences) that it is hard not to get swept along by it all. -Phil Udell.

Review Sharpe's Honour / Sharpe's Gold [1995] / ITV DVD:

Based on the novels by Bernard Cornwell, Sharpe (1993-7) ran to 14 full-length television films that follow the adventures of the titular soldier through the later years of the Napoleonic Wars. The programmes are an outstanding achievement for the small screen, dominated by Sean Bean's central performance as the heroic, troubled outsider who turns out to be a resourceful and loyal leader. Bolstered by a strong supporting cast, particularly Daragh O'Malley as Harper and (in later episodes) Abigail Cruttenden as Jane, Sharpe is often visually striking, the action tense and gripping. Consistency is maintained by all 14 episodes being directed by Tom Clegg. On the DVD: Sharpe on DVD contains a photo gallery and several screens of background text. The sound is full-bodied stereo while the very "sharp" (pun intended) picture has been transferred slightly letterboxed at 14:9. Though looking much better than the original TV transmissions the occasionally cropped framing makes it apparent the films were shot in 16:9 widescreen, so it is regrettable they have not been transferred to DVD in that format. Otherwise these are first-rate releases. -Gary S Dalkin.

Review Thunderbirds: Volume 2 [1965] / ITV DVD:

"Filmed in VIDECOLOR [explosions, drum roll, music builds to a climax] and SUPERMARIONATION"! The opening sequence of Thunderbirds is itself a masterclass in Gerry Anderson's marionette hyperbole: who else would dare to make a virtue out of the fact that (a) the show is in colour and (b) it's got puppets in it? But everything about this series really is epic: Thunderbirds is action on the grandest scale, pre-dating such high-concept Hollywood vehicles as Armaggedon by 30 years and more (the acting is better, too), and fetishising gadgets in a way that even the most excessive Bond movies could never hope to rival. Unsurprisingly, it transpires that the visual effects are by Derek Meddings, whose later contributions to Bond movies like The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker echo his pioneering model work here. As to the characters, the clean-cut Tracey boys take second place in the audiences' affections to their cool machines-the real stars of the show-while comic relief is to be found in the charming company of Lady Penelope and her pink Rolls (number plate FAB1), driven by lugubrious chauffeur Parker, whose "Yes, milady" catch phrase resonated around school playgrounds for decades. (Spare a thought for poor old John Tracey, stuck up in space on Thunderbird 5 with only the radio for company. ) The puppet stunt-work is breathtakingly audacious, and every week's death-defying escapade is nail-bitingly choreographed in the very best tradition of disaster movies. First shown in 1964 and now digitally remastered, Thunderbirds is children's TV that still looks and sounds like big-budget Hollywood. On this DVD: The four episodes are: "Edge of Impact", "Day of Disaster", Thirty Minutes After Noon" and "Desperate Intruder".
