Review Batman Forever [1995] / Warner Home Video:

When Tim Burton and Michael Keaton announced that they'd had enough of the Batman franchise, director JoelSchumacher stepped in (with Burton as coproducer) to make this action-packed extravaganza starring Val Kilmer as the capedcrusader. Batman is up against two of Gotham City's most colourful criminals, the Riddler (a role tailor-made for funnyman Jim Carrey) and the diabolical Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), who join forces to conquer Gotham's population with a brain-draining device. Nicole Kidman plays the seductive psychologist who wants to know what makes Batman tick. Boasting a redesigned Batmobile and plenty of new Bat hardware, Batman Forever also introduces Robin the Boy Wonder (Chris O'Donnell) whose close alliance with Batman led more than afew critics to ponder the series' homoerotic subtext. No matter how you interpret it, Schumacher's take on the Batman legacy is simultaneously amusing, lavishly epic and prone to chronic sensory overload. -Jeff Shannon.

Review War Wagon (John Wayne) [1967] / Universal Pictures Video:

John Wayne and Kirk Douglas make a delightful duo in this comedic Western in which Wayne seeks revenge on a ruthless mine owner (Bruce Cabot) who had him framed and sent to prison. Upon his release, Wayne recruits Douglas in a scheme to raid and rob one of Cabot's gold-laden wagons, despite the fact that Douglas had been offered good money to kill Wayne. He joins Wayne instead (the potential profits being much greater), and they set out to ambush the War Wagon, so named because it's heavily armored, mounted with a Gatling gun, and guarded by a dozen gunmen on horses. Costarring Keenan Wynn and Howard Keel as a wise-cracking Indian, The War Wagon was a Western precursor to the action buddy films of the 1980s and '90s, serving up plenty of exciting action and constant comic relief. The interplay between Wayne and Douglas is sharp and sarcastic, and their motley crew of accomplices provides yet another source of character-driven humour. Not one of the greatest Westerns ever made, but certainly one of the most lightly entertaining. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Tombstone [1993] (REGION 1) (NTSC) / Walt Disney Video:

This Western has become a modest cult favourite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P Cosmatos, who has yet to make a better film than this. -Jeff Shannon.

Review Ocean's Twelve [HD DVD] / Warner Home Video:

Like its predecessor Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve has a preposterous plot given juice and vitality by the combination of movie star glamour and the exuberant filmmaking skill of director Steven Soderbergh (Out of Sight, The Limey). The heist hijinks of the first film come to roost for a team of eleven thieves (including the glossy mugs of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, and Don Cheadle), who find themselves pursued not only by the guy they robbed (silky Andy Garcia), but also by a top-notch detective (plush Catherine Zeta-Jones) and a jealous master thief (well-oiled Vincent Cassel) who wants to prove that team leader Danny Ocean (dapper George Clooney) isn't the best in the field. As if all that star power weren't enough-and the eternally coltish Julia Roberts also returns as Ocean's wife-one movie star cameo raises the movie's combined wattage to absurd proportions. But all these handsome faces are matched by Soderbergh's visual flash, cunning editing, and excellent use of Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome, among other highly decorative locations. The whole affair should collapse under the weight of its own silliness, but somehow it doesn't-the movie's raffish spirit and offhand wit soar along, providing lightweight but undeniably enjoyable entertainment. -Bret Fetzer.

Review Man On Fire [Blu-ray] [2004] / 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment:

There’s something refreshingly old-fashioned about director Tony Scott’s action-packed, hard-edged film Man On Fire. Starring Denzel Washington as John Creasy, it’s the story of a man who is working as a bodyguard for a nine-year old girl, Pita (played by Dakota Fanning). The two start growing close, against their respective expectations, and ultimately, the plot takes one or two inevitable turns. It is, to be fair, a fairly well trodden story path that Man On Fire covers, but what lifts it above the dirge of rivals is the quality on offer. Denzel Washington is a terrific actor to anchor such a film around, and you never fail to believe in his take on Creasy. Fanning, too, is on fine form here. And it’s refreshing to see director Tony Scott putting some of his heavy-editing techniques to one side, to the clear benefit of the movie. There’s no effort either to tone down the violence here, and the film easily earns its 18 certificate. The journey to high definition proves to be a comfortable one for Man On Fire, unsurprising given how recent the film is. It’s also highly rewatchable, even if you’ve seen it before, and a rare modern day action film that chooses not to compromise itself to get a more commercial certificate. [+]

Review Collateral Damage [2002] / Warner Home Video:

Didn't the Arnold Schwarzenegger tough-guy role become outdated way back in the mid-90s? Aren't audiences tired of all this stuff by now? Collateral Damage would have you believe not. Within minutes we see the Austrian Oak in fire-fighter's uniform running to the rescue in cheesy slo-mo. Arnie's two-dimensional character seems a little archaic and so does the revenge-for-the-death-of-his-wife-and-child plot. Someone apparently thought that applying the politics of terrorism addressed in Proof of Life to the Arnie shootout genre was a good idea. Yet here even the Colombian bad guys' motivations seem muddled and hastily obscured under bullet-quick exposition. It's also no good trying to show the muscle man in a different light: so what if he mopes about with a tear in his eye for 20 minutes, we all know he's going to take the law into his hands soon enough. This he does with familiar gusto, of course. Fights and explosions ensue. Johns Leguizamo and Turturro provide comical cameos but add nothing more. The film's release was delayed so as not to offend anyone in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. [+]
Who were they kidding? No-one ever took an Arnie movie seriously, least of all this one. On the DVD: Collateral Damage on disc has a couple of documentaries that try to embellish the idea of Schwarzenegger's new on-screen persona, but neither succeed. The additional scenes deserved to be excised. The commentary from director Andrew Davis certainly hints at greater aspirations, but makes no apology for the lack of pay-off. There's supposed to be a DVD-ROM-only commentary from Schwarzenegger, too, but this reviewer couldn't find it anywhere. -Paul Tonks.

Review MacGyver - Series 4 - Complete / Paramount Home Entertainment:

The world's most clever secret agent returns for his fourth season of action, humour, and intrigue. Not much has changed for MacGyver (the very personable Richard Dean Anderson) this time around-he's still as offbeat and cerebral as before, but there are a few familiar faces joining him in season 4 (1988-89). His old friend Penny (Desperate Housewives' Teri Hatcher) appears in two episodes: the supernatural-themed season opener "The Secret of Parker House," and later, in "Cleo Rocks," which also features another returning character, though decidedly less friendly-the sinister Murdoc (Michael Des Barres, hissable as always). Also back in rotation this season is Jack Dalton (Bruce McGill), who assists Mac in several adventures before finding himself in a heap of trouble when he's accused of an attempted assassination in "Brainwashed," and Kristian Alfonso as the dangerous Deborah in the season closer "Unfinished Business" (a "clip show" that is probably the weakest episode in the season). There's also a host of well-known performers in guest roles this season, including Cuba Gooding Jr. in "The Challenge," Jason Priestly in "Blood Brothers," and a surprising turn from G. Gordon Liddy in "Collision Course," which puts Mac behind the wheel of a racecar. But the real star of the show, of course, is MacGyver's mind, which manages to get him out of some spectacular jams by the most unusual methods. Action lovers and series fans won't be disappointed by this set. -Paul Gaita.

Review Star Trek: Voyager - Season 7 [1996] / Paramount Home Entertainment:

After seven long years trying to return home, it's no surprise that the seventh season of Voyager was emotional. It begins with the resolution to season 6's "Unimatrix Zero", in which Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Torres (Roxann Biggs-Dawson), and Tuvok (Tim Russ) must find a way off the Borg Cube and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) faces the loss of the precious bit of humanity she has just discovered. "Human Error" focuses on Seven's further attempts to explore her human side (a romance comes from out of the blue). And if Seven isn't the cast's most fascinating character, it's the other crew member struggling to find his not-quite-human identity, the Doctor (Robert Picardo). In "Body and Soul," the Doctor gets to experience physical life in the body of-who else?-Seven. He writes a novel in "Author, Author," and in the first of a pair of excellent two-parters, "Flesh and Blood," he explores what it means to be a hologram in the midst of a deadly situation involving the Hirogen. In the second two-parter, "Workforce," the crew is kidnapped and brainwashed into becoming ordinary laborers on a planet with a worker shortage, but Janeway is forced to question whether she wouldn't prefer this version of a normal, stable life. The seventh season also saw the first Trek wedding since Dax-Worff, the return of the old Federation-Maquis conflict, the continuing efforts of Lt. Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz) to bring Voyager home, Kim (Garrett Wang) taking command twice (once with the help of the Emergency Command Hologram), the return of Q, and Neelix's discovery of a group of fellow Talaxians. The final episode, "Endgame," is less concerned with misty-eyed goodbyes than with a bending of conventional views of the space-time continuum that leads to an exciting showdown with the Borg queen (Alice Krige, repeating her role from Star Trek: First Contact but making her first appearance on Voyager). [+]
DVD bonus features include the usual season recap, a 12-minute featurette on the final episode, and a crew profile of the Doctor. -David Horiuchi.

Review Fire Down Below [1997] / Warner Home Video:

Here's a film that only a Steven Seagal fan could love. Fire Down Below not nearly as good as Under Siege (the movie destined to remain Seagal's high-water mark), but not any worse than Above the Law. This time ol' Steve is an agent of the Environmental Protection Agency who's busting heads in Kentucky. He's on good terms with the local yokels (including Marg Helgenberger and Harry Dean Stanton), but locks horns with a slimy mogul (Kris Kristofferson) who's using abandoned mines to dump toxic waste. Along with an ecological message, Seagal serves up several broken limbs, cracked skulls, and bloody noses, and he even finds time to do some guitar picking with country boys such as Travis Tritt and Randy Travis. Once you've heard Seagal crooning a country tune, you'll be eager to see him go back to whuppin' the bad guys. -Jeff Shannon.
